Shirley Barcus

Shirley Barcus, 80, of 111 Oak Hill Road died Sunday evening at her home following a long illness.

Born in Breckenridge, Texas, on Sept. 13, 1925, daughter of Leo and Agnes Genty Gallagher, she was educated in Corpus Christi, Texas, schools and attended Texas University.

Mrs. Barcus and her husband, Doug Barcus, raised their three children in Greenville, Mich., before moving to Pittsfield in 1969.

Primarily a homemaker, she was also active in her parish church, volunteered with Recording for the Blind in Lenox for many years, was a seamstress, and enjoyed jigsaw and crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble and bridge.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling and visited all 48 contiguous states as well as Italy, Ireland and Scotland.

Mrs. Barcus was a communicant of St. Francis' Church and a member of the Rosary Sodality. She was a regular worker at the church's Fall Festival and Craft Fair.

Besides her husband of 58 years, she leaves a son, Jeffrey L. Barcus of Pownal, Vt.; two daughters, M. Christine Barcus Tweedy of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Mary Anne Barcus Clark of San Francisco, Calif.; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mrs. Shirley Gallagher Barcus, age 80, of 111 Oak Hill Road, Pittsfield, died late Sunday evening, June 4, 2006, at her home following a long illness. She was born in Breckenridge, Texas, the daughter of the late Leo and Agnes Genty Gallagher. She was educated in Corpus Christi, Texas, schools and attended Texas University. Shirley and Doug raised their three children in Greenville, Mich., before moving to Pittsfield in 1969. She was active in Boy and Girl Scouting with her children, hosting the annual cookie drive for the town from her garage.

She and her husband were avid bridge players, Shirley particularly excelled in duplicate. Primarily a mother and homemaker, Shirley was also active in her parish church, volunteered with Recording for the Blind in Lenox for many years, was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed puzzles of all kinds -- jigsaw, crossword and Scrabble with her family. She enjoyed golf and the Red Sox on television. Doug and Shirley enjoyed traveling and Shirley was proud that she had visited all 48 contiguous states as well as Italy, Ireland and Scotland. She was a communicant of St. Francis' Church and a member of the Rosary Sodality.

She was a regular worker at the Church's Fall Festival and Craft Fair. Besides her husband of 58 years, she is survived by one son, Jeffrey L. Barcus of Pownal, Vt.; two daughters, M. Christine Barcus Tweedy of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Mary Anne Barcus Clark of San Francisco, Calif., four grandchildren, Melanie Barcus, Michael Barcus, Andrew Tweedy and Emily Tweedy; one great-grandchild, Kaytlin Barcus; a daughter-in-law, Bonni Barcus; a son-in-law, Eric Tweedy; two brothers-in-law, Arthur Dimney and Ashley Rich, and a former daughter-in-law, Christine Barcus.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Lorraine Dimney and Elizabeth Rich. The funeral for Shirley G. Barcus, 80, who died June 4, 2006, will be Saturday morning, June 10, at 9 a.m. at St. Charles Church with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME which is in charge of arrangements.
