George P. Callaghan

George P. Callaghan, 70, of 50 Pollock Ave. died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on March 5, 1936, son of Patrick E. and Mary Hughes Callaghan, he attended local schools and graduated from the former Cranwell Preparatory School in Lenox.
He received a bachelor's degree from Siena College and earned graduate credits from the former North Adams State College and from University College in Dublin, Ireland.
Mr. Callaghan was employed by the Pittsfield School Department as a teacher at Pittsfield and Taconic high schools and at Herberg Middle School, retiring in 1996. He taught economics, U.S. history, political history, political science and English. He was also a deputy sheriff for the Berkshire County Sheriff's Association.
He was a communicant of St. Charles' Church and a member of the Irish-American Organization.
He and his father, a former city councilor and state representative, worked together on various local and state political campaigns. He also was the former Berkshire County coordinator for the campaign of U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.
He and his wife, the former JoAnn Duff, would have celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary Aug. 6. They were married in St. Mark's Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Kari P. LeBeau of Springfield, Abbie J. Callaghan of Pittsfield, and Darci E. Callaghan and Michaela E. Callaghan, both at home; a brother, John E. Callaghan of Pittsfield; a sister, Elizabeth A. Bova of Vienna, Va., and three grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for George P. Callaghan, who died June 2, 2006, will be Tuesday, June 6, from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Charles' Church celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.
Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 7. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the George Callaghan Scholarship Fund at St. Joseph's High School in care of the funeral home, 776 North St., Pittsfield, MA 10201.
Beloved grandfather to Micah M., Keegan W. and Ethan George LeBeau. Mr. Callaghan was predeceased by three sisters, Margaret A. Saunders, Eileen M. Forrest and Jane C. Godfrey.
