Arthur Meuther Martin

Arthur Meuther Martin, 80, of Kemble Street died Sunday at home after a brief illness.

Born in Bronxville, N.Y., on Aug. 14, 1925, son of Arthur J. and Theodora Meuther Martin, he moved to Plainville, Conn., as a child and was a 1943 graduate of Plainville High School.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he served from 1944 to 1946, most of that time in the Pacific theater.

Following World War II, he graduated from the former Lenox Preparatory School and attended the University of Connecticut and the University of Vermont.

A college athlete, he was a standout in basketball, baseball, track and field, and cross country running.

He was a longtime Lenox resident and a self-employed area builder.

Mr. Martin played for the former Lenox Merchants, a semipro basketball team, during the winter of 1949 to 1950.

He also pitched two years for the Burlington Cardinals before signing a professional baseball contract with the Harlan (Ky.) Smokies of the Boston Braves organization on March 25, 1950.

He enjoyed stamp collecting, antique bottle hunting and wine making.

He and his wife, the former Lois Ann Chatel, were married Nov. 6, 1953. She died March 1, 1991.

He leaves five daughters, Pamela Roberts and Rebecca Fuore of Lenox, Beatrice Martin Wood of Marlborough, Molly Vreeland of Sandisfield and Jennifer Grimes of Sarasota, Fla.; five sons, Theodore J. Martin of Spring Hill, Fla., Paul Martin of Stockbridge, Peter Martin of Lenox, and Luke Martin and Jonathan Martin, both of Lee; a brother, Ted Martin of Navarre, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Another son, Arthur James Martin, died Oct. 3, 1964.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- There will be no calling hours for Mr. Arthur Meuther Martin, who died Sunday, May 28, 2006. The Rev. Robert R. Kyte will preside over a private graveside service to be held at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ventfort Hall Association in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.

Mr. Martin also leaves a daughter-in-law, Dawn Martin; sons-in-law William Fuore, Jefferson Wood, Christopher Vreeland, and Dayton Grimes; two nieces, Doreen and Lana Martin, and a nephew, Theodore Martin.

His grandchildren are Joshua and Ian Roberts, Craig and Derek Martin, Ava and Anna Martin, Robert and Daniel Fuore, Gabriel and Tobias Wood, and Lydia Vreeland. Ashleigh and Jaelyn Roberts, and Ariana Roberts are his great-grandchildren. He enjoyed his back yard for gardening, relaxation and spending time with his family.
