Audrey May Smith, 91, of Holmes Road, died yesterday morning at her home.
Born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., on Feb. 10, 1915, daughter of William G. and Lillian R. Wetherby Buchanan, she attended schools in Schenectady, N.Y., the State of New Jersey, and moved to Westerly, R.I. as a young woman and graduated from Westerly High School.
Mrs. Smith was employed as a teller for many years at the Fleet Bank in Westerly and was the head teller at the time of her retirement in 1970.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Westerly and later Charleston Baptist Church in Charleston, R.I.
She enjoyed reading, gardening, puzzles and the many fishing trips she took with her husband to Rangley, Maine.
Her husband, Arthur B. "Tank" Smith, whom she married in 1934, died in 1992.
She leaves her daughter and caregiver, Joan M. Cooper of Pittsfield, with whom she made her home, and three grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son, Arthur B. Smith, Jr., in 1993.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Calling hours for Mrs. Audrey May Smith, who died Friday, May 26, 2006, will be Sunday, May 28, at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME in Lenox from 3 to 5 p.m. A service of memory and thanksgiving for the life of Mrs. Smith will be Tuesday, May 30, at 3:15 p.m. at Buckler-Johnson Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly, R.I. A period of visitation will precede the brief service from 1 to 3 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Smith's memory may be to HospiceCare of the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
Mrs. Smith is also survived by her grandchildren, Matt Hunter Smith of Wakefield Brenda Malcolm and Audrey M. Smith, both of Rochester, Wash.; her cousin, Robert Vredenberg of Westerly; a nephew, Donald Buchanan of Bradford, R.I., and a niece, Donna Farrett of Wisconsin Dells, Wis. She was also predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Patricia A. Lamphear Smith; her brother, Homer G. Buchanan; her sister-in-law, Hilda Gledhill Buchanan; her grandson, Raymond Arthur Smith; her nephew, John W. Buchanan, and her aunt, Winifred Wetherby Vredenberg.
