Callie Mary Murphy

Callie Mary Murphy, 75, of 68 Gravesleigh Terrace, formerly of 280 Holmes Road, died Wednesday at home following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Worcester on May 8, 1931, daughter of Francis P. and Callie Clifford Murphy, she was a graduate of North High School in Worcester and of the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston.

Following graduation, she was employed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a secretary.

At the time of her death, she was a foster child case reviewer for Massachusetts Department of Social Services. She was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Berkshire Chapter to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, and in the past had volunteered with the Marilyn McInerney Parents and Children Center.

She was a communicant of St. Teresa Church and was a former C.C.D. teacher at Sacred Heart Church. She and the late Ruth Sondrini visited homebound seniors for several years.

She had served on the Board of Directors of the Berkshire Home for Aged Women, now known as Berkshire Place. She was also a member of the Country Club of Pittsfield, where she was a tennis player.

She and her husband, David W. Murphy, were married June 6, 1953.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Murphy leaves two daughters, Callie Murphy McGovern of Chevy Chase, Md., and Kristina M. Parker of Richmond, Ind.; three sons, David W. Murphy Jr. and John W. Murphy, both of Pittsfield, and Andrew K. Murphy of Brewster; three sisters, Jean Dennehy of Cypress, Calif., Frances P. Shea of Harwich Port and Sarah Healy of Sudbury; a brother, Peter B. Murphy of Brewster, and 17 grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Callie Mary Murphy, who died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, also leaves her grandchildren, Matthew, P.J. Dan, Katy, Sean, Anna, Andy, Alice, Callie, Will, Theresa, Meg, Danny, Grace E., Jane, Grace M. and Peter. She was predeceased by two brothers, Philip Murphy and Charles Murphy, and a sister, Anne Murphy.

Funeral services for Mrs. Murphy will be held Monday, May 22, at 10:15 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., at St. Teresa Church, concelebrated by the Rev. John J. Varley, pastor, and the Rev. William Eckert, Parochial Vicar of St. Mark Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Murphy may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

Mrs. Murphy gave generously of her time and energy to organizations helping abused and neglected children.
