Vera E. Carr, 88, of 600 Main St., River Run Apartments, died Wednesday at Springside of Pittsfield, where she had resided since April 14.
Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 2, 1917, daughter of Roswell and Delia Harrington Wheeler, she was educated in Richmond, Hinsdale and Dalton schools, and was a 1935 graduate of the former Dalton High School.
Primarily a homemaker, she had been employed by General Electric Co. in Pittsfield in the late 1930's.
She was a communicant of St. Agnes' Church and a member of the Dalton Garden Club.
She was also a member of the Dalton Senior Club. She served on the board of directors at the Dalton Council on Aging from 1979 to 1996, where she also served on the membership committee, the travel club and as a past assistant treasurer.
She enjoyed crocheting, watching golf and following racing at Lebanon Valley Speedway. She had resided at River Run Apartments for the past 20 years, and was one of the first tenants to move in when the complex opened.
Her husband, Chauncey B. Carr, whom she married on Feb. 2, 1938, died May 9, 1973.
She leaves two daughters, Janet E. Ellsworth of Dalton and Patricia M. Langenback of Lee; three sons, Ronald E. Carr of Pittsfield, Byron R. Carr and Duane J. Carr, both of Dalton; a sister, Elaine Briggs of Dalton; a brother, Roswell Wheeler of Hinsdale; fifteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Vera E. Carr, who died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, will be held Saturday, May 13, at 8:15 a.m. from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME in Dalton, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Agnes' Church, celebrated by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor.
Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Carr also leaves a daughter-in-law, Helen Carr; a son-in-law, John Ellsworth; a sister-in-law, Roberta "Red" Carr of Lee, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Wheeler, and a brother, Gerald Wheeler. Memorial donations in memory of Vera may be made to the Dalton Ambulance Fund in care of the funeral home, 890 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
