Richard L. Welch

Richard L. Welch, 80, of 53 Donna Ave. died at his home on Monday.

Born Feb. 26, 1926, in Beaver Falls, Pa., son of Roy and Edith Householder Welch, he moved to Pittsfield as child and was a 1944 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

Mr. Welch served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II as a ordnance man from 1944-46.

He worked for the sheet metal union until his retirement in 1984, at which time he was the shop superintendent at Pittsfield Pipers. Prior to that, he owned B&W Sheetmetal from 1955 to 1970.

Mr. Welch was a member of the South Congregational Church.

He enjoyed bowling, fishing and was a talented wood craftsman.

He formerly lived in Dalton, and from 1983-2004 he wintered in Fort Myers, Fla., and summered in Hinsdale.

He moved back to Pittsfield in October 2004.

He leaves his wife, the former Helen Fairfield, whom he married June 6, 1947.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters, Patricia A. Politis of Pittsfield and Diana L. Johnson of Bridgeton, N.J.; two sons, Richard L. Welch Jr. of Pittsfield and Robert W. Welch of Dalton; a sister, Barbara Dittman of Springfield; 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Richard L. Welch, who died Monday, May 8, 2006, will be held Friday, May 12, at 6:30 p.m. at South Congregational Church with the Rev. Joel S. Huntington, pastor, officiating.

Following cremation, burial will be the West Stockbridge Cemetery at a later date. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to HospiceCare in The Berkshires in care of WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

He was predeceased by two brothers, William Forrest and James Welch.
