Shelby M. Decker, 72, of 64 Glenn Dr., died Monday night at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in East Orange, N.J. on Dec. 7, 1933, daughter of Louis C. and Janet LaRue Wilson Denis Jr., she was raised in Plainfield, N.J. and was a 1952 graduate of Plainfield High School.
Mrs. Decker attended Mary Washington College in Fredricksburg, Va., and Temple University in Philadelphia. She graduated from the former Cornell University-New York Hospital School of Nursing in 1957 with a bachelor's degree.
She moved to Pittsfield in 1959 and was employed at the former Pittsfield General Hospital and Berkshire Medical Center, retiring in 1996. She held various positions at BMC, including head nurse of the emergency department for 12 years, director of the post-anesthesia care unit for 16 years and director of the surgical day-care unit and the pre-admission testing department.
At the time of her retirement, she was the director of the intensive, coronary and respiratory care units.
She was a member of the American Society of Post Anesthesia nurses and the Massachusetts Society of Post Anesthesia Nurses, where she had served as president and treasurer. She was certified in post-anesthesia nursing.
She leaves her husband, George W. Decker, whom she married July 19, 1975.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- There will be no calling hours for Shelby Decker, who died Monday, May 8, 2006. Burial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society, care of DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., Pittsfield 01201, in her memory.
