David McDonald Crosby

David McDonald Crosby, 68, of Cheshire Road died at home on Tuesday following a brief illness.

Born in Hudson, N.Y., on July 7, 1937, son of Theodore and Buelah Kern Crosby, he attended local schools in both Canaan, N.Y., and Chatham, N.Y.

A longtime member of the U.S. Navy, he first enlisted on Sept. 22, 1954. He served on the USS Ranger, earned the Good Conduct Medal and was discharged on May 29, 1958.

Mr. Crosby served with the U.S. Naval Reserves until re-enlisting on April 28, 1960. He served on the USS Cutlass and was honorably discharged on May 16, 1963.

He again re-enlisted on June 7, 1963. He served on the USS Roncador and earned the National Defense Service Medal, and was honorably discharged on Nov. 16, 1967.

In 1967, he again joined the Naval Reserves and then re-enlisted on March 12, 1969, for an additional four years.

He last entered active duty on Dec.. 12, 1972, serving on the USS Jack until being honorably discharged on May 9, 1975. He served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Mr. Crosby was a skilled carpenter. Among his many jobs, he worked as a truss builder for Builders First Square in Florida.

He and his wife, the former Bettylou Handlowich, were married Nov. 22, 1963, in Sheffield. They lived in Canaan, N.Y., Bunnell, Fla., and, most recently, in Pittsfield.

He was a member of the Canaan Fire Department and loved to work repairing houses with his family.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Sharon Lynn Crosby of Red Rock, N.Y.; two sons, David McDonald Crosby Jr. of Bunnell, Fla., and Theodore R. Crosby of Canaan; nine grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for the late David McDonald Crosby, who died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires through FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
