Robert I. Clark Sr.

Robert I. Clark Sr., 86, of 120 Onota St. died Tuesday at Hillcrest Commons Nursing Home, where he had been a patient for the past nine months.

Born in Springfield on Dec. 6, 1919, son of Frank Edison and Isabel Maloye Clark, he was raised in Northampton, where he attended local schools and was a 1939 graduate of Northampton High School. He took post-graduate courses there in 1940.

A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, Mr. Clark served as a gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress and was among a crew that was shot down in June of 1943. Following capture, he spent the next two years as a prisoner in Stalag 17B in Austria. After his release in 1945, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Tech Sergeant.

He came to Pittsfield in 1949 to attend the General Electric apprentice tool-making course and after his training was employed by G.E. for twenty years. He was a computer programmer in the Ordinance Division until 1969 when his military service connected disability forced him to retire.

Mr. Clark was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.

He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Post of Pittsfield. He enjoyed basket weaving, chair caning, and woodworking.

His wife, the former Florence Morin, whom he married in Northampton on April 21, 1946, died Dec. 7, 1996. His second wife, the former Olive Roberts Francks, whom he married Aug. 21, 1999, died June 21, 2003.

Mr. Clark leaves three daughters, Andrea A. Weiss of Decatur, Ga., and Mary L. Clark and Barbara J. Sadlowski, both of Pittsfield; two sons, Robert I. Clark Jr. of Lanesborough, and Dennis J. Clark of Cheshire; nine grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mr. Robert I. Clark Sr., who died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, will be held Saturday morning at 8:15 a.m. from DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church celebrated by the Rev. David Raymond, pastor of St. Mary the Assumption Church of Cheshire.

Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans of Pittsfield in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Mayfred Clark, Barbara Clark and Ruth Anderson, and a brother, William Winnie.
