Mary R. Fitzgerald, 74, of Rockland Street, Springfield, formerly of Pittsfield, died Monday at home.
Born in Springfield on Feb. 1, 1932, daughter of Jerry and Rose Derose Chechile, she was a 1950 graduate of Cathedral High School and received her associate degree from Bay Path College in Longmeadow in 1952.
While in Pittsfield, Mrs. Fitzgerald was executive secretary at the Department of Mental Health and for the Pittsfield postmaster. Previously, she worked in Washington, D.C., for the CIA at the Pentagon and was a secretary for the Honorable Judge Keyes of Springfield for several years. She returned to Springfield in 1991 and retired from the Springfield post office.
She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in Springfield and a member of its choir. In Pittsfield, she was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.
She enjoyed traveling and gardening and was a patron of the arts. She was an active participant in both the Cursillo and Beginning Experience groups.
Her husband, Thomas F. Fitzgerald, died in 1987.
She leaves a daughter, Kathleen F. Wood of Braintree; two sons, Brian T. Fitzgerald of Pittsfield and Daniel G. Fitzgerald of Newton; a sister, Isabelle Gentile of Springfield, and two grandchildren.
Another son, Kevin M. Fitzgerald, died in 1981.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mary R. Fitzgerald, who died Monday, April 17, 2006, will be Friday, April 21, at 9:45 from FORASTIERE-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 220 North Main St., East Longmeadow, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 at Holy Cross Church, 221 Plumtree Road, Springfield.
Rites of Committal will be held Saturday, April 22, at 10:30 in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Peck's Road, Pittsfield. Mary's family will receive friends tomorrow from 4 to 7 in the Westwood Room at the funeral home.

She also leaves two grandsons, Michael N. and Christopher T. Wood, both of Braintree; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and -nephews, and numerous friends.
