Charles W. Rutkowski

Charles W. Rutkowski, 88, of Granby, Conn., died Friday at St. Francis' Hospital in Hartford, Conn.
His daughter, the late Christine Tierney, was a resident of Pittsfield.
Born in Northampton on Feb. 18, 1918, son of Victor and Sophie Zielinski Rutkowski, he attended schools there and was active in local athletics.
One of five brothers to serve in World War II, he served in the Navy aboard the USS Mustin (DD-413) destroyer in the Pacific theater. He received the Purple Heart.
Mr. Rutkowski was employed by James River Graphics in South Hadley for 18 years, retiring in 1981.
Before that, he was a member of the Easthampton Auxiliary Police Department for two years.
After his return from the war, he was employed by Hampden Specialty of Easthampton.
He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a lifelong member of American Legion Post 224, both in Easthampton.
He and his wife, the former Emily Szczepanski, were married Nov. 20, 1941.
Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Linda LeFebvre and Donna McGuire, both of Windsor, Conn., and Cheryl Vaid of Florence; a brother, Victor Rutkowski of Northampton; seven grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
He also was predeceased by another daughter, Cynthia Rutkowski.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Calling hours for Charles W. Rutkowski will be tomorrow, April 11, from 4 to 7 at BOUCHER O'BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 7 Pleasant St., Easthampton. Friends and relatives are invited to gather Wednesday at 9 at the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church at 10, with burial in St. Stanislaus' Cemetery.
The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to the staff of Meadowbrook of Granby for the special care provided him during his stay and the joy they brought into his life through the recreation they provided. Contributions in Charlie's memory may be made to the Meadowbrook of Granby Recreation Fund, 350 Salmon Brook St., Granby, CT 06053.
Mr. Rutkowski also leaves seven grandchildren, Colleen (Tierney) Sousa, Caroline and Keith Tierney, Brendan and Lindsey LeFebvre, and Cynthia and Terrance Vaid; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Sousa; a sister-in-law, Harriet Rutkowski; a son-in-law, Philip Tierney, and his wife, Ann; a grandson-in-law, Chris Sousa, and nieces and nephews.
