Anna E. Berte, 89, of 74 Perrine Ave. died Saturday afternoon at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Cheshire on Sept. 17, 1916, daughter of John E. and Mary Ann Buckley Berte, she was a 1933 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a 1936 graduate of the former North Adams Normal School.
She taught grades 5 and 6 at Stearns School and was appointed principal at the former Redfield School in 1947. She retired as principal on July 31, 1979 after 38 years in the Pittsfield School System.
Previously, she taught for five years at schools in Hampden before joining the Pittsfield School System in 1941.
She was a daily communicant of St. Mary's Church.
She was also a member of the North Adams State College Alumni Association, and a member of the Massachusetts State Teacher's Association.
She leaves a sister-in-law, Cecelia M. Berte of Pittsfield.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Anna E. Berte, longtime Pittsfield school principal, died April 1, 2006. A memorial mass will be held at St. Mary's Church at a later date, celebrated by the Rev. Paul Bombardier, pastor.
Burial will be in the Cheshire Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Mary's Church, care of DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., Pittsfield MA 01201.
