Edker Austin

Edker Austin, 83, of 30 Prospect St. died Sunday evening at Springside of Pittsfield, where he had been a patient for the past two months.
Mr. Austin moved to Pittsfield from Chapel Hill, N.C., in 1966.
Born in Sunflower, Miss., on Jan. 16, 1925, son of Captain and Emma Leftridge Austin, he was a 1941 graduate of Hardin High School in Pittsboro, N.C.
A World War II Army veteran, he served from Jan. 5, 1943, to Jan. 5, 1946, and was discharged with four bronze service stars.
He was employed as an assembler in the Power Transformer Department at General Electric Co. for 16 years, retiring in 1983. For five years following his retirement, he was a maintenance man for Kentucky Fried Chicken in Pittsfield and in Lee. Prior to coming to Pittsfield, he had been a truck driver for Roadway Express out of Durham, N.C.
Mr. Austin was a 40-year member of the Macedonia Baptist Church in Great Barrington, where he served as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher, and as superintendent of the Sunday school.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and carpentry.
Mr. Austin leaves his wife, the former Nellie Mae Alston, whom he married on Sept. 22, 1951, in Danville, Va.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Dannie Austin of Chapel Hill, N.C.; four daughters, Janet M. Austin of Pittsfield and Roxie A. Williams, Angela L. Austin and Lynette S. Mason, all of Chapel Hill; two brothers, Laburn Austin of Pittsfield and WillieCap Austin of Pittsboro, N.C.; a sister, Rosie Lee Tuck of Pittsfield; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Edker Austin, who died Sunday, April 2, 2006, will be held Friday at noon at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Great Barrington with the Rev. Joseph Forte, pastor, officiating. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at Pittsfield, Cemetery.
Calling hours will be at the church on Friday from 11 a.m. to noon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Macedonia Baptist Church in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford, St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
He leaves a son-in-law, Bobbie Williams; a sister-in-law, Betty Jo Austin; a host of nieces and nephews, and family and friends.
