Robert H. Benedict

Robert H. Benedict, 69, of 16 Cresant Lane died Sunday at Fletcher Allen Medical Center from injuries suffered in a car accident.

Born in Pittsfield on January 28, 1937, son of Harold and Zella Gottschalk Benedict, he was a 1954 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

Mr. Benedict was employed by the City of Barre (Vt.) in the Public Works department, retiring in 1999. Previously, he was employed by Pittsfield Tire and later Berkshire Frosted Foods (SS Pierce).

He was the chairman of Union AFSCME Local 1369 for many years, and a past member of the Richmond Volunteer Fire Department; some of this time was spent as chief.

He enjoyed watching stock car racing, attending the annual picnic at Benedict Pond with his family, and his modified S-10 pickup truck. He was also a Red Sox fan.

He leaves four daughters, Jean Beach of East Bridgewater, Linda Vermilyea of Housatonic, Jeri McCarthy of Hinsdale and Chantelle Safford of Barre, Vt.; three sons, Harold Benedict of Hatfield, John Benedict of Lenox and Robert Martin of Barre, Vt.; two stepsons, Scott and Daryl Martin of Barre, Vt; a sister, Helen Nicholas of Richmond; a brother, John P. Benedict of Stowe; ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Mr. Robert H. Benedict, who died Sunday, March 26, 2006, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. John T. Cunningham, pastor of Immanuel Community Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in the West Stockbridge Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Richmond Volunteer Fire Department care of the funeral home, 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

He was predeceased by a brother, Edward Benedict, as well as his companion of many years, Joan Martin.
