Pompi G. "Mr. D." DiNicola

Pompi G. "Mr. D." DiNicola, 52, of 16 Fairway Ave. died of natural causes yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on July 15, 1953, son of Clara Spelorzi DiNiola and the late Panfilo DiNicola, he graduated from Taconic High School in 1971 and attended Essex Community College in Danvers.

At the time of his death, Mr. DiNicola was a culinary arts instructor at Pittsfield High School, where he had been employed for 26 years.

He was also co-owner of the Madison Cafe on Madison Avenue.

He was the first recipient of the Pittsfield Restaurant Association Scholarship in 1971.

A communicant of Mount Carmel Church, he was also a member of the Berkshire County Chefs and American Culinary associations. An active volunteer, he served Christmas Day dinners at the American Legion, cooked pancake breakfasts for the Citizens Scholarship Fund, and participated in many golf tournaments for local fundraisers. He also enjoyed fishing.

Besides his mother, of Carlisle, he leaves a daughter, Sarah L. DiNicola of Putney, Vt.; a son, Timothy P. DiNicola of Herndon, Va.; a sister, JoAnn F. DiNicola of Carlisle, and his former wife, Linda O'Brien of Pittsfield.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Pompi G. DiNicola, who died Saturday, March 25, 2006, will be tomorrow, March 28, at 12:30 from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 at Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Geoffrey Deeker, CSS, pastor. Cremation will follow.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be today, March 27, from 5 to 8. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Unico of Pittsfield or to Kids' Place, both in care of the funeral home, 5 Elm St., Pittsfield, MA 01220.

As co-owner of the Madison, he made many friends who became an important part of his life. He especially loved spending time with his family and was very proud of his two children. He also leaves many cousins and a niece.

After 26 years of teaching at Pittsfield High School, where he was affectionately known as "Mr. D.," he touched the lives of thousands of people. His great sense of humor and overwhelming generosity were an inspiration. He will be deeply missed by everyone.
