Thomas F. "Murphy" Grace, 88, of 42 Fern St. died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born in Pittsfield on March 2, 1918, son of Richard H. and Eliza Jones Grace, he was a 1936 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the military police and was the personal bodyguard for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, his wife, Eleanor, and their dog Fala when they toured South America.
He was employed in the maintenance department at the Berkshire County Courthouse for 23 years. Before that, he worked at Hashim's Package Store for many years. Following his retirement, he peddled eggs and sweets out of his car and was known as the "Egg Man."
A communicant of St. Mark's Church, he enjoyed thoroughbred horse racing.
He leaves a nephew, Thomas F. Galloway, with whom he resided, and a niece, Linda Lou Clark of Florida.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Thomas F. "Murphy" Grace, who died March 23, 2006, will be conducted Tuesday at 11 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. John Salatino, pastor of St. Mark's Church. Burial will be in the spring in Cheshire Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Veterans' Outreach Center in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Mr. Grace also leaves several great-nieces and great-nephews.
