Martin Littman

March 16, 2006

Martin Littman, 84, of Needham, died March 16 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, Needham campus. He was the father of Ellen Whitmer of Pittsfield.

Born in New York City on July 9, 1921, son of Henry and Fannie Fingerhut Littman, he graduated from Rutgers University and received his master's degree from Columbia University.

Mr. Littman served with the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was principal of schools in Newark, N.J., and Oradell, N.J., and retired after 35 years.

He was a member of Mensa, the Needham Retired Men's Glee Club and the Jewish War Veterans Newton-Brookline Chapter, and was active in international folk dance, serving as an instructor.

Besides his daughter, he leaves his wife, the former Priscilla Sherman; two sons, Robert Littman of Needham and James Littman of San Diego; a brother, Harold Littman of New Jersey; a sister, Rita Goldman of New Jersey; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Martin Littman, who died Thursday, March 16, 2006, was held Sunday, March 19, in Temple Beth Shalom, 670 Highland Ave., Needham.

Burial followed on Monday in National Cemetery in Bourne. His daughter, Ellen Whitmer, will receive friends at her home on Sunday, March 26, from 3 to 5 p.m. Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements by EATON FUNERAL HOME, Needham. Mr. Littman was predeceased by his sister, Miriam Steinberger.
