Edward H. Gromatski

Edward H. Gromatski, 90, formerly of 34 Thomas Road, died Monday at LifePath-Hospice in Temple Terrace, Fla.

Born in South Deerfield on April 11, 1915, son of Adam and Josephine Ciborowski Gromacki, he worked on the family farm. He later became an amateur boxer until his marriage. He was employed by the New York Central Railroad as a trainman and brakeman for 25 years. After retiring from the railroad, he and his wife co-owned and operated Orange Stationery and Gifts in Orange for a number of years.

His wife of 68 years, the former Arline Nash, whom he married on April 5, 1935, in Holy Trinity Church in Greenfield, died April 11, 2005. The couple resided in Pittsfield from 1941 until 1966 and then returned after their retirement for a number of years until Arline's death.

Then he went to Berkshire, Vt., for the summer to live with his daughter Carol and spent the winter in Tampa, Fla., living with his grandson Christopher. While living in Pittsfield, he was a communicant of St. Charles' Church. While in Florida, he attended St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church.

He leaves a son, Edward Gromatski of Ocala, Fla., two daughters, Arline "Peachy" Jacquot of St. Pete Beach, Fla., and Carol Nepton of Berkshire; a brother, Alex Gromacki of Springfield; a sister, Catherine Golash of Springfield; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Edward H. Gromatski, 90, who died Monday, March 20, 2006, will be on Friday, March 24, at 11:15 a.m. from the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at noon at St. Charles Church, celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

The are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or St. Charles Church in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201. He leaves his grandchildren, Michael Gromatski, Joseph Tyler, Robert, and Ted Mottor, Stephen and Christopher Jacquot, Edward Gromatski, and Bonnie Reynolds, seven great-grandchildren, his dog Kristee, and many friends. He was predeceased by three brothers, Adam Gromack, Stanley, and George Gromacki, and two sisters, Josephine Wood and Beatrice Zink. He was a BIG guy with such a gentle nature, he exemplified what a true "Gentleman" is all about!
