George David Knight

George David Knight, 88, formerly of Hazelwood Terrace, died Thursday morning at Sugar Hill Senior Living Community in Dalton.

Born in Great Barrington on Nov. 6, 1917, son of Clark and Estella Drumm Knight, he was a 1938 graduate of Pittsfield High School.

A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 7, 1942, and was trained as an aviation mechanic for duty in the South Pacific, where he was stationed for two years. He was then transferred to Sand Point Naval Air Station in Seattle, where he remained until the end of the war. He was discharged on Oct. 14, 1945, with the rank of aviation machinist mate, first class.

Mr. Knight began his employment at General Electric Plastics in 1940 for about a year before transferring to the Transformer Department. Upon returning from the war, he continued his employment at the Transformer Department until 1949, when he transferred to GE Ordnance, where he was employed in security and plant protection until his retirement in January 1981 with 41 years of service.

He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church.

His wife, the former Gladys Leona Wilker, whom he married April 4, 1942, died Nov. 13, 2002.

He leaves four daughters, Jayne E. Knowlton of Vienna, Va.; Jean E. Segal of Williamsburg, Va.; Patricia A. Garvey of Pittsfield; and Pamela J. Burt of Hopedale; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Karen L. Miller, who died Jan. 1, 2002.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for George David Knight, who died Thursday, March 9, 2006, will be Saturday, March 25, at 11 a.m. at Morningside Baptist Church with the Rev. Suzanne M. Zacher, interim pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Knight may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Mr. Knight also survived by his sons-in-law, Michael W. Garvey, Edward Burt, and Clifford Miller III; his 10 grandchildren, Jessica Young and Sarah Knowlton, Jennifer and Joshua Segal, Laura and Sarah Miller, Kyle and Patrick Garvey, and Molly and Lindsey Burt, and great-grandson, David Robert Young. He was predeceased by two sons-in-law, Capt. Robert Knowlton and Joseph Segal.
