James E. Bruce

Dr. James E. Bruce, 82, of 84 Brighton Ave. died Friday at home after a short illness.
Born in Philadelphia on Nov. 28, 1923, son of William and Mary Brennan Bruce, he was educated in schools there and graduated from LaSalle University in 1946. He received his medical degree in 1950 from Temple University Medical School.
Dr. Bruce practiced general medicine for four years in several communities in eastern Pennsylvania and Ohio.
After completing his military service as an Army veteran of the Korean War, he did his residency in Elyria, Ohio. He moved to Pittsfield in 1964 and was appointed head of the anesthesiology department at the former St. Luke's Hospital.
Upon the merger of the former Pittsfield General and St. Luke's hospitals, he practiced at the newly established Berkshire Medical Center, retiring in 1989.
Dr. Bruce was a founding member of Berkshire Anesthesiologists.
He moved to Brewster in 1990 and returned to Pittsfield in 2002.
A communicant of Sacred Heart Church, he was a former eucharistic minister. While a resident of Brewster, he was a communicant of Our Lady of the Cape. He enjoyed his extensive collection of Broadway musicals, Alfred Hitchcock films and vintage Bing Crosby recordings.
He and his wife, the former Jane I. Matsinger, would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary April 14.
Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Robert J. Bruce of Needham, James G. Bruce of Franklin and Paul H. Bruce of Dalton; five daughters, Mary Ellen Bruce of Northampton, Jane P. Bresnahan and Karen M. Auge, both of Pittsfield, Rita M. Jacobs of New Market, N.H., and Patricia M. Bruce of Milford; 23 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Another daughter, Judy M. DiCicco, died June 21, 2000.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Dr. James E. Bruce, 82, died at home March 3. He was the "Proud Papa" of 23 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME from 4 to 8.
The celebration of his life will continue Wednesday morning at 10 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will take place in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to either HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to the Berkshire Visiting Nurses' Association, both in care of the funeral home, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
