Robert A. Johnson

Robert A. Johnson, 80, of 20 Sawmill Park, Southwick, formerly of Burr Drive, died Thursday at Noble Hospital in Westfield.
Born in Durham, N.H., on Nov. 17, 1925, son of Arthur and Alice Spinney Johnson, he attended Dover (N.H.) High School. He moved to Dalton in 1956.
An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he enlisted in March 1944 and was honorably discharged on June 15, 1946, after a tour of duty in Europe.
After the service, he graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1949.
He was employed by Crane & Co. for 34 years, retiring as the company's administrative manager in 1990.
He was a member of First Congregational Church, where he taught Sunday school and served on numerous church boards and fundraising committees. He also served on Dalton's finance, traffic and recreation committees.
He was a 10-year member of the Dalton Community Chest, serving as chairman and solicitor. In later years, he was a member of the Dalton Saturday Evening Club, where he held various offices, including chairman of the club's 100th-year anniversary.
A runner, swimmer and golfer, he could be seen frequently at Dalton's Community Center, logging more than 1,000 swim miles. He was a 48-year member of Wahconah Country Club, where he walked and played endless rounds in his retirement with the "Dilly Boys."
He and his wife, the former Nancy Chesley, were married in 1950.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, David Johnson of Westfield and Donald Johnson of West Springfield, and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Robert A. Johnson will be conducted Monday, March 6, 2006, at 1 at Dalton Congregational Church by the Rev. Robert Kyte, pastor. Burial will be at a later date in Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Agawam. Calling hours will be tomorrow, March 5, 2006, from 2 to 5 at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made in Bob's name to the Jimmy Fund, 1309 Beacon St., Brookline, MA 02446-9918 or the Cancer House of Hope, 86 Court St., Westfield, MA 01085. He also leaves two daughters-in-law, Patricia and Helen, and two grandchildren, Johanna and Trevor. All those who knew and loved him will miss Bob's genuine smile and gentle, caring personality. Shadow and Tana have lost their best friend.
