George R. Baumann

George R. Baumann, 83, of North Street died Tuesday morning at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 2, 1923, son of George M. and Louise Meyers Baumann, he attended school in Housatonic and was a 1941 graduate of the former Searles High School in Great Barrington.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Baumann was a diver with the 106th Engineer Port Construction and Repair Group. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Service Star for his efforts in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

He was a telephone lineman for New England Telephone Co. for 38 years, retiring in 1985.

Mr. Baumann was a resident of Lenox for over forty years and had made his home in Pittsfield since October of last year.

He was a communicant of St. Ann's Church in Lenox. He enjoyed taking long walks with his dogs to Woods Pond and Cranwell in Lenox, arts and crafts, playing cards, crossword puzzles and reading to his grandchildren.

Mr. Baumann and his wife, the former Phyllis A. Leydet, were married in St. Ann's Church on June 8, 1957.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Anita M. Fresolo of Oxford, Cynthia L. Boivin of Oakfield, Wis., Joann B. Kingsbury of Dalton and Donna M. Baumann of Pittsfield; one son, William G. Baumann of Great Barrington; four brothers, Paul Baumann of Housatonic, Joseph Baumann of South Yarmouth, Gerald Baumann of Lee and Peter Baumann of Great Barrington; four sisters, Ann Costa of Great Barrington, Patricia Ciolina of Salisbury, Conn., Joan Clark of Matthews, N.C., and Mary Whitbeck of Salisbury, and nine grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for George R. Baumann, who died Feb. 28, 2006, will be held Friday, March 3, at 10:15 a.m. from ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Church in Lenox celebrated by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Baumann's memory may be made to either the Lenox Ambulance Squad or St. Ann's Church, both in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.

Mr. Baumann is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Anthony and Nicholas Fresolo, Jenna and Brandon Kingsbury, David and Robert Boivin, Amanda Baumann, and Michael and Joseph LaFreniere; his sons-in-law Anthony Fresolo, David Boivin, and Michael LaFreniere, and daughter-in-law Wendy Baumann. He was predeceased by his brothers Thomas, James and John Baumann.
