Herbert William Spence Jr.

Herbert William Spence Jr., 73, died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born on June 11, 1932, in Melrose, son of Herbert and Hazel Friburg Spence, he grew up in Saugus where he graduated from Saugus High School in 1951. He went on to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the General Electric Apprentice course in Lynn.
Mr. Spence worked for GE for 35 years, retiring from the Power Transformer Division in Pittsfield in 1987.
He was an active member of First Congregational Church of Dalton for 41 years.
He was a 50-year member of the Masons and belonged to the Unity Lodge of Masons since living in Dalton.
He loved working with tools in the basement, designing, and making a variety of items out of wood. He skied at the Mount Greylock Ski Club for many years, where he was a certified ski patrol member.
He worked summers as a gatekeeper at Tanglewood for 15 years.
He leaves his wife of 50 years, the former Ann M. Sprague, whom he married June 11.
He also leaves two daughters, Paula S. Cockram of Orlando, and Roxanne Spence of Pittsfield; a son, Eric Spence of Pittsfield; and his sisters Shirley Guild of Andover and Barbara Webber of Mashpee, and five grandchildren. He is predeceased by three brothers, Warren, Charlie, and Richie Spence.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A celebration of Herbert W. Spence Jr., who died Feb. 20, 2006, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Dalton with the Rev. Robert Kyte, pastor, officiating. Following the service, a gathering will be held in the church parlor. Following cremation, burial will be at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Berkshire Humane Society, First Congregational Church School, or the Dalton Council of Aging, care of the BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
He leaves a son-in-law, Larkin Cockram; a daughter-in-law Joanne Sutherland Spence, and five grandchildren, Ashley, Garrett, Rebekah, Max and Charlie. Known to his family by the nickname "Uncle Pinky," he was a very caring, generous and attentive husband, father, grampa, manager, brother, uncle, and friend.
He could always be counted on in every endeavor to go the extra mile never expecting anything in return. His children remember the time he spent helping them with their homework and unique school projects as well as the family vacations and holiday gatherings. He looked forward to going to monthly luncheons with his friend, Bob Mottershead, and other Fellow GE Retirees.
He died surrounded by his family, the Rev. Bob Kyte, and a special nurse Amy Bartlett. His accepting smile, comforting blue eyes, and kind nature will be missed by all those who met him including those at the Ralph Froio Center and Craneville Place.
