Bernice A. Squires, 67, of Abbott Street died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on June 13, 1938, daughter of Anna Fitch Croughwell and the late Arthur Croughwell, she attended Lenox schools and was a 1956 graduate of Lenox High School.
Mrs. Squires was employed by New England Telephone Co. as a telephone operator in Lenox for a few years. From 1966 to 1977, she owned and operated the former Wayside Restaurant and worked briefly as a manager at the former Mid-Town Motel, both in Dalton.
She was a waitress at Blantyre and at the Lenox House, where she worked for 16 years. At the time of her death, she was employed as a bartender at the Lenox 218.
She was a member of the Polish Community Club of Pittsfield, where she played in several pitch leagues.
Besides her mother, of Dalton, she leaves four daughters, Linda Ann Plant of Dalton, Jeannie Rist of Pittsfield, Colleen R. Pirzl of Lanesborough and Patty Pierce of Pittsfield; a son, Stephen M. Tatro of Dalton; a sister, Jean Alibozek of Pittsfield; 10 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Bernice Croughwell Squires will be conducted tomorrow, Feb. 21, at 6:15 at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME in Lenox by the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor of St. Ann's Church in Lenox.
Calling hours will be tomorrow from 2 to 6. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernice's memory may be made to either the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association, both in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
Bernice is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Kellie MacHaffie, Heidi-Lyn Plant, Caitlin, Samantha and Mollie Tatro, Nakiesha and Shanna Pirzl, Herbert "Jay" Pirzl IV, Crystal Balsamo and Justin Pierce; six great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Karen Tatro; sons-in-law David Plant, Herbert Pirzl III and Keith Signor, and her beloved pet, Keila.
