John Asklipious

John Asklipious, 71, of Buel Street died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Flushing, N.Y., on July 25, 1934, son of Alice Fassios Asklipious and the late Otto Asklipious, he moved to Great Barrington when he was in his early teens.

He was a graduate of the former Searles High School in Great Barrington.

Mr. Asklipious served in the Navy.

An entrepreneur, he formerly owned and operated a number of restaurants throughout the area.

He established A.A. Transport in Great Barrington, which he operated until retiring in 2002.

He enjoyed cooking.

Besides his mother, of Las Vegas, he leaves a son, Peter Asklipious of Nokomis, Fla.; four daughters, Alexandra Asklipious, with whom he resided, Sabrina Asklipious of Venice, Fla., Adriene Laska of Stockbridge and April Rollins of Pittsfield; a brother, George Asklipious of Las Vegas, and eight grandchildren. Another son, John Asklipious Jr., died Sept. 8, 2004.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for John Asklipious will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at 11 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington by Pastor David Stambovsky of Greater Grace Church in Lee. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery in Great Barrington.

The family will receive friends tomorrow, Feb. 21, 2006, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the John Asklipious Memorial Fund through the funeral home at 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.

John loved people and always had a special place in his heart for "the underdog." He would go out of his way to help anyone in need. Because of Mr. Asklipious' dedication and love, an orphanage in West Africa will be named after him at a later date.
