Mary Emelia Whitman

Mary Emelia Whitman, 86, formerly of 57 Cromwell Ave. died Wednesday morning at Springside of Pittsfield, where she had resided since October 2005.
Born in Pittsfield on Feb. 16, 1919, daughter of Kris and Barbara Dagis Gelaznik, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School.
Mrs. Whitman was employed as an office clerk for the state Department of Public Welfare for 10 years. Previously, she had been employed by Berkshire Life Insurance Company.
She also worked at the former Federal Bakery, which was on North Street.
She was a member of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing cards, flower gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Her husband, John C. Whitman, whom she married Oct. 1, 1946, died Aug. 29, 1988.
She leaves a daughter, May J. Layden of Pittsfield, two grandsons, and two great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Mary Emelia Whitman, who died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006, will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Dr. Peter D. Boehringer, pastor of Zion's Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating.
Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Whitman may be made to Friends of Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
She also leaves her son-in-law, Dennis J. Layden; two grandchildren, Eric (and his wife, Victoria) Layden and Ryan Layden, both of Pittsfield, and two great-grandchildren, Evelyn Layden and Collin John Layden.
She was predeceased by her two brothers, Peter and John Gelaznik.
