John D. Coletsos

February 13, 2006

John D. Coletsos, 73, of 222 Dawes Ave. died Monday afternoon at Berkshire Medical Center following a long illness.

Born in Athens, Greece, on Oct. 22, 1932, a son of Demetrios and Irini Vitalioti Coletsos, he came to North America in 1959.

He studied engineering physics and mechanical engineering at McGill University and the University of New Brunswick, both in Canada.

He lived in Long Island, N.Y., and Wilton, Conn., where he worked in major defense and aerospace programs, such as the B-52, the V-2 recon aircraft, F-11 fighter plane and the lunar orbiter satellite of the Apollo program.

From 1973-76, he was corporate director for quality and new product validation testing at AMI Inc., makers of Hateras Yachts, Head Athletic equipment and Harley Davidson motorcycles.

In 1976, he joined General Systems Co. of Pittsfield, an international systems and management consulting firm, where he was lead consultant in major systems programs in the United States and abroad, including Memorex, Cummins, Union Pacific Railroad, Pirelli, ALFA-Ronco, Fiat and Citibank.

At General Systems, among his fellow engineers, he was called "The Engineer." General Systems co-owner, Dr. Armand Feigenbaum, said Mr. Coletsos was given this honor "because he was someone who had been to the front and proven his worth."

He retired after 25 years with General Systems and formed his own company, doing work in Greece and France.

Mr. Coletsos leaves his wife, the former Marina LeQuoy, whom he married Aug. 2, 1959; two sons, Andrew Coletsos and James Coletsos, both of Pittsfield; a daughter, Irene Coletsos of Brookline; a sister, Eugenia Sovganidis of Athens, Greece; and a grandson.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- John D. Coletsos, known for his love of hard work, good food and Greek traditional dancing, died Monday, Feb. 13. He was also known for his holiday parties, which featured Martha Stewart-style turkey, spanikopita and Greek dancing lasting far into the morning.

He also leaves a daughter-in-law, Sonya Ostrowski (wife of Andrew), and son-in-law, James Ross; a grandson, Marcus Coletso Ross; brother-in-law, Vasilios Sovganidis; two nieces, Irini Sovganidis and Donita Sovganidis, their families and cousins in Athens, Greece, and Paris, France.

Calling hours will be Thursday, Feb. 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield. Funeral services are private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Coletsos may be made to the Sunday School of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 73 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
