Helen C. Mela McConnell

Helen C. Mela McConnell, 88, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Pittsfield, died Monday at Harbour Wood Nursing Center in Clearwater.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., on March 11, 1917, daughter of Sidney and Henny Petersen Huff, she moved to Pittsfield as a child and attended local schools, graduating from Pittsfield High School.

She moved to Becket in 1971 and to Florida in 1982.

Mrs. McConnell did clerical work for several years at General Electric in Pittsfield.

While a resident of Pittsfield, she had been active in the May Matoon Women's Group at South Congregational Church.

She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Clearwater.

She enjoyed cooking and baking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, making jewelry and crafts, and collecting chickadee figurines.

She married her first husband, Ralph A. Mela, on Feb. 12, 1949. He died June 7, 1984. She married her second husband, Leigh McConnell, in London, Ontario, Canada, in 1986. He died in 1993.

She leaves a daughter, Wendy H. Romanyszyn of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a son, Kristian R. Mela of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; a stepson, Murray McConnell of Hagar, Ontario, Canada; a brother, Sidney Huff of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; five grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Helen C. Huff Mela McConnell, who died Feb. 6, 2006, will be held Sunday, Feb. 26, at 11:45 a.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Clearwater with a reception to follow.

Mrs. McConnell also leaves five grandchildren, Bryan Romanyszyn of Palm Harbor, Wendi Mela Dahlinghaus of Winthrop Harbor, Ill., Andrew Mela of Norfolk, Va., Angela Mela Wurl of Samish, Wash., and Sarah Mela of Reynoldsburg, and two great-grandsons, Maxwell Wurl of Samish, Wash., and Evan Dahlinghaus of Winthrop Harbor, Ill.
