Frances D. Callahan

Frances D. Callahan, 91, of 74 Beverly St. died Thursday at home.

Born in Dalton on Feb. 4, 1914, she attended schools there and graduated in 1936 from Syracuse University with a bachelor's degree in education in 1936 and in 1938 with a degree in library science.

Mrs. Callahan was a librarian at the University of Massachusetts in the early 1940s and, from 1962 to 1981, served in the same capacity at the Morningside Branch of the Berkshire Athenaeum.

A lifelong communicant of St. Agnes' Church, she and her husband, Leonard M. Callahan, were married there Nov. 27, 1943. He died June 22, 1998.

She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and a member of the Friends of the Dalton Library and the Syracuse University Alumni Club.

She leaves two daughters, Maureen Wing of Medford and Margaret Callahan of Dalton, and a grandson.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Frances D. Callahan, who died Feb. 2, 2006, will be Tuesday at 9:15 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Agnes' Church celebrated by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor.

Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Monday from 3 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield MA 01201.

She also leaves a grandson, Stephen Wing; a son-in-law, Gary Wing; a sister-in-law, Corrinne Callahan, and cousins, nieces and nephews. She enjoyed her family, traveling and reading.
