Edna R. Grossenbacher

Edna R. Grossenbacher, 85, of 21 Marlboro Drive, died at her home on Monday.

Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, April 2, 1920, she was the daughter of Carl and Ella Matz Cohrs.

She was graduated from Chapleau, Ontario High School and then attended Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, where she earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1941.

In 1942, she received her master's degree in physics from Smith College.

During World War II, she worked at Canadian Industries Limited and then received her teaching certificate from Ontario College of Education.

Mrs. Grossenbacher taught math at Russell Sage College, in Troy, N.Y., for two years. For a short time after, she taught math as a substitute in Pittsfield and then for three semesters at Miss Hall's School.

She was an active member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Rhoda Circle and the Lutheran Church Women.

She was an active supporter of the annual Smith Club book sale, played piano, collected piano music, knitted, hooked rugs and enjoyed organizing coupons.

Mrs. Grossenbacher leaves her husband, Ernest C. Grossenbacher Jr., whom she married August 13, 1949; a daughter, Nancy Gionesi of Oxford; two brothers, Norman F. Cohrs and Charles H. Cohrs, both of Kingston, Ontario. A son, Ernest C. Grossenbacher, died in 1951.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The Funeral for Edna R. Grossenbacher, who died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Peter Boehringer, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME will be on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. A brother, Raymond Cohrs, predeceased her.

If friends desire, donations can be sent to the funeral home at 220 East St., Pittsfield, MA 01201 and are suggested to World Hunger/Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.
