Mary S. Smith

Mary S. Smith, 90, of 379 East St. died Thursday at Hillcrest Commons Health Care Facility where she resided for the past week.

Born in Gilbertville on June 20, 1915, she was the daughter of Edward and Johanna Sullivan Gosselin and was a 1934 graduate of Hardwick High School.

Mrs. Smith was a resident of Pittsfield for the past 55 years. Prior to moving to Pittsfield, she lived in Palmer.

She was employed as a licensed practical nurse at the former St. Luke's Hospital, Springside Nursing Home and at Willow Manor Nursing Home. She retired in 1982 after 30 years.

She was a member of the Ralph Froio Senior Center and was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church.

She enjoyed ceramics, often making gifts for family and friends.

She and her husband, Francis B. "Bud" Smith, were married Jan. 9, 1936, in St. Aloysius Church in Gilbertville. He died in 1965.

She leaves a daughter, Maryellen Long of Salem, Ore.; two sons, James A. Smith of Shelburne Falls, and Michael W. Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Winifred Gardner of Fort Washington, Md.; a brother, Edward Gosselin of Tamarac, Fla.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A son, Francis B. Smith Jr., died in 2003.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mrs. Mary S. Smith died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006. Beloved mother-in-law to Margot Apple, Patricia Smith, Carol Smith, Donna Young and Alan Long. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her devoted friends, the Kozlowski Family. She was predeceased by her longtime companion, Walter Kozlowski.

A memorial liturgy will be celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church celebrated by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Ralph Froio Senior Center in care of the DWYER FUNERAL HOME in her memory.
