Grace S. Gross

Grace S. Gross, 99, a longtime resident of Bennington, Vt., died Saturday at Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington.

She was the mother of Geralyn Barschdorf of Pittsfield.

Born in Rutland, Vt., on May 17, 1906, daughter of Orrin W. and Helen Fraser Sumner, she was a 1924 graduate of the former Bennington High School and received her nurse's training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, where she graduated in 1929.

Mrs. Gross was first employed by Mount Sinai Hospital. After returning to Bennington, she was employed by the former Putnam Memorial Hospital. Her nursing career spanned more than 50 years. At the time of her retirement, she was charge nurse for the maternity ward.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Bennington and a member of the Bennington County Nurses Association.

She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was known for her rose gardens.

She and her late husband, Louis F. Gross, were married in New York City.

Besides her daughter, she leaves another daughter, Diane E. Cardinal of Stonington, Conn.; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Grace S. Gross, who died Jan. 21, 2006, will be held from MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. David Jinno, pastor of North Bennington Baptist Church, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home today, Jan. 23, from 4 to 7, when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice through the funeral home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

She also leaves nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pleased to meet her namesake and latest great-granddaughter, Grace, who arrived in November 2005.

She was predeceased by two sisters and four brothers, Alice Cherry and Jessie Maclay, and Claude, Guy, Willard and Lawrence Sumner.
