John A. Garstang

John A. Garstang, 56, of 92 Baker St. died Wednesday at his home.
Born in Pittsfield, son of John C. and Ruth K. McNamara Garstang, he attended Pittsfield schools, graduating from Pittsfield High School in 1968.
A Marine Corps veteran, he served during the Vietnam War as a sergeant, receiving the Navy Achievement Medal.
Mr. Garstang was last employed by Caligari Hardware in Lenox from 1995 to October 2005. Prior to that, he was employed briefly by O.W. Landergren Inc. before becoming the proprietor of Dalton Avenue Variety in Pittsfield from 1972 to 1994.
He was a communicant of St. James Church in Chatham, N.Y.
He enjoyed the ocean, golf, nature and keeping up with the current news.
He leaves his wife, the former Evelyn A. Romeo, whom he married on Aug. 5, 1978.
He also leaves a daughter, Jade Ling Garstang of Richmond; three sisters, Donna Pimental of Pownal, Vt., Gail Tetlow of New Lebanon, N.Y., and Jody Mathis of Dalton.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for John A. Garstang, who died Wednesday, Jan 18, 2006, will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 9:45 a.m. from FLYNN-DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at St. James Church in Chatham, N.Y., with the Rev. Gary Paul Gelfenbien, pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Patrick's Cemetery, West Stockbridge. Calling hours will be on Friday, Jan. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
He leaves four nieces, Colette Barnes, Kari Mathis, Melody Marckres and Starlene Armstrong; five nephews, Trevor Barnes, Corey Mathis, Michael Pimental and Todd and Paul Tetlow; a sister-in-law, Linda Barnes; a brother-in-law, Raymond Barnes, and a mother-in-law Pierina Romeo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Half the Sky Foundation in care of the funeral home, 5 Elm St., Pittfield, MA 01201.
John has gone to meet his good friends of 16 years, Bill W. and Dr. Bob. John was a special man with a love for all, especially his family and friends.
