Robert M. "Dutch" DeWinkeleer Sr.

Robert M. "Dutch" DeWinkeleer Sr., 74, of 34 Paula Ave. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

Born in New Brunswick, N.J., on June 20, 1931, son of Alphonse and Frances Uhor DeWinkeleer, he was educated in Bronx, N.Y., schools and was a 1948 graduate of PS 181 High School there.

He moved to Pittsfield 37 years ago.

He served in the Merchant Marine.

Mr. DeWinkeleer was employed as a butcher and plant manager at Wohrle's Foods in Pittsfield for 20 years, retiring in 1993. Before that, he worked at Stop & Shop and at the former Adams Super Market. After his retirement, he worked part time at Price Chopper.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and a member of the GEAA Pistol Range and the National Rifle Association.

He served as a Scoutmaster with the Cub Scouts of America and coached minor league baseball in Pittsfield. He was a Yankees fan.

He and his wife, the former Hedwig Baranowski, were married Dec. 23, 1964, in Thompsonville, Conn.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Robert M. DeWinkeleer Jr. of Southwick, Scott L. DeWinkeleer of Northridge, Calif., and Jonathan A. DeWinkeleer of Pittsfield; five daughters, twins Diane F. Flynn of Whately and Denise M. Astle of Las Vegas, Kathleen J. Cranson and Tara A. Coty, both of Lee, and Mary Lee Tyson of Quartz Hill, Calif.; a brother, Bruce DeWinkeleer of Springfield; 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Maryann C. Tyson, died July 19, 1982.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private Liturgy of Christian Burial for Robert M. "Dutch" DeWinkeleer Sr., who died Jan. 16, 2006, will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church by the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Mr. DeWinkeleer leaves his 11 beloved grandchildren, Jade Coty, Lisa-Marie, Nicole, Lindsay and Nicholas DeWinkeleer, Aubrey Astle, John Astle Jr., and Aaron, Matthew, Benjamin and Elizabeth DeWinkeleer. He also leaves his four beloved great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Maryann C. Tyson, on July 19, 1982, and by two grandchildren, Tonya Brochu and Sharlene Astle. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the UNICO Make-a-Wish Foundation in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201, which is in charge of arrangements.
