Laura Alexander

January 07, 2006

Laura Alexander, 96, of Paisley Terrace died Saturday at home.

Born in New York City on Oct. 28, 1909, daughter of Israel and Frieda Linder, she was educated and attended design schools in New York.

In 1932, together with master leather craftsman Fred Jahn, she created a business in her name, Laura Lee Linder, in New York City, which designed and sold leather desk accessories for home and office.

Three years later, the business was sold to the former Eaton Paper Co., which sold her designs under her name in the United States and abroad.

She received international recognition and awards, including one from the 1937 Paris World's Fair. She retired from Eaton in 1982 and began to design and consult for H. George Caspari Inc., a fine paper and desk accessory company in New York, working until her death.

A member of the T Club, she volunteered and was active for many years at the Berkshire Museum, the Berkshire Medical Center gift shop, the Berkshire Botanical Garden and The Mount.

In 1937, she married Wallace Utley Alexander, a vice president of City Savings Bank. He died in 1960.

She leaves a daughter, Ann A. Roosevelt of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Ethel Stoll and Claire Elioseff, both of New York City; a brother, Martin Linder of Long Island, N.Y.; a grandson, and a great-granddaughter.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- At Laura Alexander's request, there will be no services. WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 220 East St., Pittsfield, Mass., is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors also include a grandson, Simon C. Roosevelt, and a great-granddaughter, Alice Belle Roosevelt, both of New York City, and nieces and nephews.
