Kenneth E. Murrell

Kenneth E. Murrell, 66, of 81 Appletree Lane died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Carthage, Mo., on April 14, 1939, son of Mildred Edmondson Murrell and the late Keith A. Murrell, he was a 1957 graduate of Independence (Kan.) High School.

He attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., on a football scholarship, graduating in 1963 with a bachelor of science in business, and received his law degree in 1966 from Washburn University law school. He moved to Dalton in 2001. He served in the Army for two years.

For the past 4 1/2 years, Mr. Murrell was vice president of marketing at Berkshire Life Insurance Co. of America in Pittsfield. He was director of special marketing from 1995 to 2001 with Standard Insurance in Portland, Ore.

He was a member of the board of the American Heart Association in Pittsfield and a member of LIMRA, an insurance association in Hartford, Conn.

He was past president of the Sales & Marketing Association of Memphis and a fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and the University of Oregon Ducks. He enjoyed reading and history.

He and his wife, the former Robin L. Vinson, were married Sept. 20, 1987, in Corona Del Mar, Calif.

Besides his wife and mother, of Independence, Kan., he leaves six daughters, Amy L. Gordon of Beaverton, Ore., Kelly A. Musto of Norfolk, Susan L. Moody of Attleboro, K. Melody Smith of Providence, R.I., Brenna R. Smith of Portland, Ore., and Sarah A. Murrell of Dalton; two brothers, Gary Murrell of Portland, Maine, and Roger Murrell of Independence, Kan.; four grandchildren, and a grandchild expected in February.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Kenneth E. Murrell, who died Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, will be Wednesday at 10:15 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Agnes' Church celebrated by the Rev. Christopher Malatesta, pastor.

Burial will take place at a later date in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. There will be no calling hours. Ken was a respected businessman and a devoted family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and his grandchildren, Lacey A. Musto, Christopher and Bryce Gordon, and Chloe Moody.

He was also anticipating the arrival in February of a new granddaughter, Zinnia Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1250 Fourth St., Santa Monica, CA 90401.
