The Rev. Stephen Ward Turrell

The Rev. Stephen Ward Turrell, 87, of Duxbury, formerly of Pittsfield, died yesterday at the Radius Health Care Center in Plymouth after a long illness.
Born in Hempstead, N.Y., on Aug. 15, 1918, son of Stephen and Grace Powell Turrell, he graduated from New Lebanon High School in 1936, University of Alabama in 1940 with a bachelor of science in civil engineering, and Hartford Theological Seminary in 1943 with a bachelor of divinity degree.
He was ordained in the Christian ministry in New Lebanon, N.Y., in 1943.
During World War II, Rev. Turrell was a chaplain in the Army, stationed in Paris.
He served as assistant minister and director of religious education at First Congregational Church in Pittsfield from Aug. 1, 1946, until he became pastor of Evangelical Congregational Church in Grafton in August 1949.
Rev. Turrell was convener of the clergy for the Pittsfield Council of Churches, and was an advisor to the Pilgrim Fellowship of the Berkshire North Association of Congregational-Christian Churches.
He also served churches in Northfield, Conn., Beverly, and Duxbury. On Sept. 1, 1983, he resigned as minister of Pilgrim Church in Duxbury after 20 years.
While in the Worcester area, he served as the Protestant chaplain of the Worcester City Hospital and later as the Protestant chaplain of the Grafton State Hospital.
While in Beverly, he served as president of the local Ministerial Association and of the Congregational Ministerial Association while at First Federated Church.
While in Duxbury, he was vice president of the Duxbury Council of Churches and chairman of the Church and Leadership Committee of the Pilgrim Association of the United Church of Christ.
After retiring from Pilgrim Church in Duxbury, he served interim pastorates at the Central Church in Bridgewater, First Congregational Church in Marshfield, and First Congregational Church in Plympton.
He also served as the chaplain and pastoral care coordinator for the Cranberry Hospice in Plymouth from 1988-1993. From 1999-2002, he served as the minister of visitation at First Congregational Church in Marshfield.
He leaves his wife, the former Alice Lloyd of Duxbury; a son, Mark Turrell of Plymouth, and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Jonathan Turrell.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for the Rev. Stephen Ward Turrell, who died Jan. 3, 2006, will be held on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 10 a.m. at Pilgrim Church, 404 Washington St., Duxbury. He was a loyal Red Sox fan who lived to see them finally win a World Series Title. He was a loving and devoted husband and a wonderful father and grandfather.
