Harold Joseph Sweeney

Harold Joseph Sweeney, 82, of 105 Lenox Ave., and longtime former resident of Tucker St. in Lenox, died Friday at Springside of Pittsfield, where he had resided since March, 2005.

Born on Feb. 2, 1923 in Pittsfield, son of Joseph H. and Edith A. Soutier Sweeney, he attended Pawtucket, R.I. schools, where his family lived for several years.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he served aboard the U.S.S. Lansdale in the South Pacific, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

Mr. Sweeney was employed by the Western Massachusetts Electric Company for 37 years, retiring in 1983 as a field line supervisor.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW of Pittsfield.

His wife, the former Carol Mary Grogan, whom he married on Sept. 23, 1944 at St. Mary's Church in Lee, died September 18, 2000. He leaves two daughters, Judith Ann McLean and Sandra Marie Jamross, both of Pittsfield; a son, Brian Joseph Sweeney of Pittsfield; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Harold J. Sweeney, who died Dec. 30, 2005, will be private. Calling hours at DERY FUNERAL HOME will be Tuesday, Jan. 3 from 3:30 to 6:30.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 10201.

Mr. Sweeney is lovingly survived by his eight grandchildren, Edward, Robert, John and Richard Shove, Jennifer Moriarty, Michael Jamross, and Lindsay and Stephen Sweeney.
