Robert C. Bogle

Robert C. Bogle, 88, of Shaw Road, Little Compton, R.I., died Friday at St. Anne's Hospital, Fall River.

He lived in Pittsfield from 1956 to 1979.

Born in Peabody, son of Irving W. and Minnie Chapman Bogle, he grew up in Fall River and graduated in 1934 from Durfee High School. In 1939, he received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Brown University, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He also attended the former Bradford Durfee Textile School.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as lieutenant aboard a Landing Craft, Infantry (Gunboat) in the South Pacific.

Mr. Bogle was a textile chemist, working in the research and development division of A.H. Rice Company. He worked there for 23 years, retiring in 1979. Prior to that he worked 13 years for American Thread Company in Fall River and North Carolina.

He was a member of First Church of Christ Congregational in Pittsfield, where he served as deacon, moderator and superintendent of its Sunday School. He was also a member of United Congregational Church in Little Compton, where he was a deacon and head of Adult Bible Studies.

A Rotarian, he was former president of the Pittsfield chapter. He was a member of the Newport County Navy League and served on the board of Visiting Nurses Association of Little Compton.

He enjoyed gardening vegetables, and listening to big band and march music.

He was a member of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, and the Delta Chapter of Phi Psi National Honorary Textile Fraternity.

He and his wife, the former Ruth Coombs, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary earlier this year.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, retired Navy captain Ronald Coombs Bogle of Portsmouth, R.I.; four daughters, Carol B. Appleton and Leslie B. Wilson, both of Little Compton, Nancy B. Westfeldt of Aspen, Colo., and Susan B. Finnegan of West Hartford, Conn.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Bogle.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A celebration of the life of Robert C. Bogle, who died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, will be Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at 11 at United Congregational Church, Little Compton. Memorial donations may be made to the Church Education Building Fund, P.O. Box 506, Little Compton, RI 02837, or Visiting Nurses Association, P.O. Box 545, Little Compton, RI 02837. WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE, Fall River, is handling the arrangements.

He also leaves a daughter-in-law, Jane K. Bogle; four sons-in-law, Charles N. Appleton, Weems Westfeldt, James J. Finnegan and Keith J. Wilson; 11 grandchildren, Robert, Scott, Kathryn, Alexander, Linda, James P., Cary, Dylan, and triplets Benjamin, Wallace and Patrick.

He was also predeceased by a brother, Donald A. Bogle.
