Fred A. "Art" Gwinnell

Fred A. "Art" Gwinnell, 77, of 88 McArthur St. died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center.
For more than 25 years, he was a basketball referee at the Boys' Club and umpired baseball games throughout Berkshire County.
Born in Pittsfield on June 30, 1928, son of Fred and Georgianna VanValkenburg Gwinnell, he was a 1944 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
He played varsity baseball in high school and was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers. A knee injury ended his career.
Mr. Gwinnell was employed by General Electric Co. in the plastics division for more than 30 years, retiring as a supervisor. He was chief shop steward of IUE Local 254 for white-collar workers.
He was a member of Pilgrim Memorial Church and of the former Rainbow Club of Pittsfield.
He was involved in the Pittsfield Babe Ruth League for many years and in 1974 was elected vice president of the American division.
He leaves a nephew, Henry Newton of Dalton.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Fred "Art" Gwinnell, who died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, will be conducted tomorrow at 2 at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Corey Loder. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery.
Calling hours will be tomorrow from noon until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Senior Center of Pittsfield, 330 North St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
He also leaves his nephew's wife, Wendy Newton, and three great-nephews, Brad, Alex and Jake Newton.
