Arthur J. Conlon Jr.

Arthur J. Conlon Jr., 80, of Crofut Street died Tuesday evening at Hillcrest Commons.
Born in Boston on May 26, 1925, the son of Arthur J. and Miriam O'Callaghan Conlon, he moved with his family from Dorchester to Belmont, where he attended local schools.
He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1943 and received his bachelor of arts degree cum laude from Harvard University in 1947; he excelled in baseball, football, baseball and hockey at both institutions. He received his master of business administration degree from Harvard School of Business in 1949.
Mr. Conlon served in the Navy ROTC program and, later, the Navy Reserves until being honorably discharged on July 23, 1956, with the rank of lieutenant junior grade.
He owned and operated his own business supply company, Desk Organizers, at 100 North St. for many years. Prior to that, he was employed as a salesperson by Gorham Silver Manufacturing and later Royal Worcester Porcelain. He returned to the Gorham Co. in 1957 and came to Pittsfield in 1956 to work at their Eaton Paper division, where he was a vice president.
Prior to making his home in Pittsfield he had lived in Arlington, New Canaan, Conn., and Warwick Neck, R.I. For the past 25 years, he has spent winters in Naples, Fla.
He and his wife of 52 years, the former Annette Curran of Andover, were married in Holy Cross Cathedral in Boston on Nov. 28, 1953.
Mr. Conlon became a corporator and member of the board of directors of the former City Savings Bank, now Legacy Banks, in 1967 and also was a member of its Executive Committee from 1970 until his retirement in 2001. He was also a member of the board of directors of Berkshire Country Day School for many years.
A golfer, he was a member of the Country Club of Pittsfield and the Country Club of Naples.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Gary A. Conlon of Pittsfield and Stephen C. Conlon of Lenox; a daughter, Joyce M. Conlon of Amherst; two sisters, Brenda Abely of Sea Island, Ga., and Lilla O'Donoghue of Scituate, and six grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private funeral Mass for Mr. Arthur Joseph Conlon Jr. will take place Friday at St. Ann Church in Lenox with the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor, celebrating the Liturgy of Christian Burial.
Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at ROCHE FUNERAL HOME in Lenox. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Conlon's name may be made to Phillips Exeter Academy or the charity of one's choice, both in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
Mr. Conlon is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Alex and Julia Barber and Patrick, David, Isabelle and Andrew Conlon.
