William G. McCarthy Sr.

William G. McCarthy Sr., 73, of 41 Woodbine Ave. died Thursday of an apparent heart attack while driving on North Main Street in Lanesboro.

Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 2, 1931, son of Thomas and Pauline LaBrode McCarthy, he attended local schools.

An Army veteran of the Korean War, he served from 1952 to 1954 with K Company, 149th Infantry, and was discharged as a corporal.

Mr. McCarthy was employed by GE in the former power transformer department for 25 years. He retired in 1991.

He was a 30-year member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 448, where he served in the color guard and as captain for 10 years, and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs.

He enjoyed cooking and was a New York Yankees fan.

He and his wife, the former Dolores Heintz, were married March 8, 1953. She died Jan. 11, 1984.

He leaves a daughter, Patricia Sidway of Lanesborough; a son, William G. McCarthy Jr. of Cheshire; a sister, Elaine McCarty of Pittsfield; a brother, Eugene McCarthy of Pittsfield, and two granddaughters. He was predeceased by two daughters, Lynn McCarthy and Colleen McCarthy.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William G. McCarthy Sr., who died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, will be conducted Monday at 11 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor of St. Charles' Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 1 to 4 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Shriners' Hospital for Crippled Children in care of the funeral home. He also leaves two granddaughters, Christa Sidway and Shauna Zaffuto; a son-in-law, Steven Sidway; a daughter-in-law, Donna McCarthy; a brother-in-law, William McCarty, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Patricia McCarthy, and a brother Richard McCarthy.
