Charles W. Lavelle Sr.

Charles W. Lavelle Sr., 89, of 365 Peck's Road died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on June 23, 1916, son of Joseph and Laura Boyer Lavelle, he attended local schools.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Lavelle was also a supervisor of maintenance at Miss Hall's School, retiring in 1996 after 36 years of service. Before that, he was employed as a supervisor at the former Berkshire Woolen Mills, retiring in 1961 after 25 years of service.

He was a communicant of St. Charles' Church. He and his wife, the former Margaret Dunn, were married Oct. 28, 1939, at Sacred Heart Church. She died Nov. 27, 1995.

He leaves a son, Charles W. Lavelle Jr. of San Antonio; five daughters, Katheryne C. Welch, Margaret M. Rizzo and Beverly J. Tobin, all of Pittsfield, Constance A. Biegel of Lanesborough and Deborah S. Byrd of Dalton; a brother, Joseph M. Lavelle of Pittsfield; two sisters, Millie Shelsky of Springfield and Anna Blake of Pittsfield; 20 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mr. Charles W. Lavelle Sr. died in Pittsfield on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005. He knocked on Heaven's gate and was greeted by Margaret, his loving wife of 55 years. She patiently waited for him to come home 10 years this same month. He was welcomed by his parents, Joseph and Laura Lavelle, and his brothers Dick, Alford and Edward Lavelle, as well as a sister, Connie Jermohlen.

Also in view were his two infant grandchildren, Dawn Marie Garneau and Travis Crosier. His remarkable legacy will carry on with his six children. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9 from DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Charles' Church celebrated by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours are tomorrow from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made to St. Charles' Church Endowment Fund or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires, both in care of the funeral home.
