Robert E. "Whiz" Taylor Sr.

Robert E. "Whiz" Taylor Sr., 80, of 40 Porter Ave. died Monday morning in Shirley, at the home of his son.

Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 30, 1925, son of Herman F. and Bessie Signor Taylor, he was educated in Dalton schools.

A veteran of the Navy, he served on the USS Boston from Jan. 4, 1943, to Oct. 17, 1946.

Mr. Taylor was the curator of Crane's Museum of Papermaking from 1990 to 1992. Prior to that, he was a mailroom clerk at Crane & Co. Inc. for 42 years.

He was a member of the Benjamin F. Sullivan Post 155 of the Dalton American Legion. He built his own home, and he enjoyed making stone walls, bowling and playing cards.

He was a fan of the Red Sox.

He and his wife, the former Elizabeth O'Leary, were married June 30, 1951, in St. Agnes' Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, James J. Taylor of Lancaster, and Robert E. Taylor Jr. of Shirley; a daughter, Beth M. Randall of Southampton, N.J.; two brothers, Herman F. Taylor of Preston, Ariz., and Garth L. Taylor of Arizona; a sister, Dorothy Brooking of Middlefield, and five grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Robert E. "Whiz" Taylor Sr., who died Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, will be Friday, Nov. 18, at 10:15 a.m. from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. at Berkshire Hills Seventh Day Adventist Church, Route 8 in the Berkshire Village section of Lanesborough, with the Rev. Gary Wagner, pastor, and Mr. Taylor's son-in-law, Lay Pastor Art Randall, officiating.

Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations in Bob's memory may be made to Berkshire Hills Seventh Day Adventist Church, in care of the funeral home, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.

He also leaves five grandchildren, Matthew Randall, Darren Randall, Zachary Taylor, Bryanna Taylor and Maeve Taylor.
