Rose Irene Shurkus

Rose Irene Shurkus, 80, of Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility, formerly of 78 Ontario St., died Wednesday evening at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Adams on May 5, 1928, daughter of Stephen J. and Edith Payron Gokey, she attended the former Dalton High School.

A homemaker, Mrs. Shurkus had been a waitress at the former Steamer's Diner and had also worked at Crane & Co. in Dalton.

She was a communicant of St. Ann's Church in Lenox.

She was fond of animals.

Her husband, Joseph P. Shurkus, whom she married Sept. 15, 1951, died May 12, 2001.

She leaves a son, Joseph P. Shurkus Jr. of Plantsville, Conn.; a daughter, Donna Ostellino of Pittsfield; three sisters, Carol Turner and Sally Gokey, both of Pittsfield, and Joan Witek of North Adams, and three grandsons.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Rose Irene Gokey Shurkus, who died Wednesday, Nov. 9, leaves her daughter-in-law, Marita Paul Shurkus, her three grandsons, Rick Ostellino, Ethan Shurkus and Ryan Shurkus, and her dog, "Angel."

Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 14 at 9 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Ann Church, celebrated by the Rev. Daniel B. Brunton. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to the American Diabetes Association, both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St. She loved being with her family.
