Barbara Jean Gavin, 74, of Epworth Arms died Monday evening at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Springfield on Nov. 18, 1930, daughter of Thomas and Bessie A. Rounds Roberts, she was educated in schools in Springfield and Pittsfield.
Mrs. Gavin was employed as a clerk at the former Nichols Pharmacy for four years until its closing. Prior to this, she had worked as a chamber maid and assistant housekeeper at the former Wendell Hotel for many years.
She enjoyed playing bingo and walking.
Her husband, Lawrence J. Gavin, whom she married Nov. 25, 1948, died Dec. 30, 1974.
She leaves two daughters, Patricia A. Smith of Pittsfield and Donna M. Bailey of Malta, N.Y., five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Barbara Jean Gavin, who died Monday, Nov. 7, leaves her sons-in-law, William A. Bailey Sr. and Francis C. Smith, five grandchildren, Jean-Marie O'Shea, Daniel J. Smith, Karen S. Bailey, William A. Bailey Jr. and David M. Bailey, and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Francis "Sam" Smith Jr., who died June 20, as well as her brother, Thomas Roberts Jr., and her sister, Helen E. Henry. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St.
