Franciszka "Frances" Katherine Smith, 89, of 54 Under Mountain Road died Monday evening at the Village at Laurel Lake in Lee, where she had resided for the past year.
Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 17, 1916, daughter of William and Helen Podgurski Pictrowski, she attended local schools and was a 1935 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Smith was the clerk for the Town of Lenox Board of Assessors, retiring several years ago. She also did home care for many years. Prior to her marriage, she was a payroll clerk at GE Plastics Division and a nurse's aide.
She was a communicant of St. Ann's Church, where she was a member of its Rosary Altar Society. She participated in St. Ann's annual fair and sold many hand-crocheted animals to benefit the church.
She was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Stickles-Turnure VFW Post, and volunteered for 4H and Cub Scouts. She was also a member of the Senior Citizen Center, where she taught crafts.
Her husband, Joseph C. Smith, whom she married in Holy Family Church on Oct. 20, 1945, died July 27, 1985.
She leaves a daughter, Nancy C. Curtin of Mt. Airy, Md.; two sons, Joseph A. Smith of Halifax, and William J. Smith of San Francisco; a brother, Walter Pictrowski of Pittsfield; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Franciszka "Frances" Smith will be Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Ann's Church, with the Rev. Christopher J. Waitekus, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to either HospiceCare of the Berkshires or the American Cancer Society, both in care of the funeral home, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240.
Mrs. Smith also leaves a son-in-law, Eugene Curtin; a daughter-in-law, Jean Smith; her loving grandchildren, Kevin C. Curtin and his wife Cindi, of Mount Airy; Eugene J. Curtin of King's Beach, Calif., Scott F. F. Curtin of College Park, Md., and Jillian C. Smith of Halifax; a great-grandson, Hunter K. Curtin of Mount Airy; a sister-in-law, Clara Pictrowski of Pittsfield, and Stanislaus and Nellie Smith of Lenox, who were a wonderful support to her.
She also leaves many nieces and nephews, especially Jean Kergaravat and Mary Ann Ploss. She was predeceased by three sisters, Helen Stiles, Wanda Choquette and Julia Potash, and a brother, Frank Pictrowski. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, and nephews Anthony and Mark Smith.
Frances Smith's pickles were well-known and her recipe is now taught by her niece, Wendy Liebenow, at the Berkshire Garden Center. Mr. Smith had been the caretaker for the former Blake estate on Under Mountain Road and later worked for the Town of Lenox Water Department.
