Mary Elser Refeen

Mary Elser Refeen, 93, formerly of Old North Rd in Worthington died Monday at Curtis Manor in Dalton, where she had been a resident since July.

Born in Mansfield on Aug. 16, 1912, daughter of Charles H. and Lydia Jacques Sturtevant, she attended Dalton and Pittsfield public schools.

She was a member of First Congregational Church of Dalton since 1950.

Mrs. Refeen was a clerk at the former England Brothers Dept. Store for 30 years, retiring in 1968.

She enjoyed playing cards and riding in the country along dirt roads.

Her first husband Edward P. Elser, whom she married Sept. 14, 1935, died May 2, 1988. Her second husband, Harry Refeen, whom she married September 8, 1995, died this past May 14.

She leaves a daughter, Dian Elser of Dalton; a stepdaughter, Audrey Macoux of Cummington; a stepson, Edward Refeen of Williamsburg; a sister, Bernice Estes of Windsor; a brother, George Sturtevant of Windsor; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Mary Elser Refeen will be tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the chapel of First Congregational Church of Dalton, with the Rev. Robert Kyte, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Ashuelot Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 9 until the funeral.

She also leaves a granddaughter, Liza Boardman of Sandwich; grandsons Christian Gallison and David L. Elser, both of Pittsfield; great-grandchildren Melanie and Robert Gallison of Germany, Jocelyn and Geoffrey Gallison of Pittsfield, Molly, Sara, and Sophia Elser of Pittsfield, and Amy and Mary Boardmen of Sandwich; a son-in-law, Walter F. Schiffer of Dalton, and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either Curtis Manor Residents' Fund or First Congregational Church of Dalton Memorial Fund, care of BARTLETT WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
