Demetrious Kurkamelis, 87, formerly of 99 Second St. died Sunday afternoon at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in New York City on June 13, 1918, son of Zezimos and Nicoletta Kurkamelis, he was a graduate of New York City schools.
He was a resident of Hillcrest Commons since June 5, 2002.
Mr. Kurkamelis was a shipping clerk with the former New York Herald Tribune for many years. He also was a cook in New York City diners. He retired in 1983.
He was an avid New York Yankees fan, taking his nephews to see Joe DiMaggio play.
He was also an avid New York Rangers fan and enjoyed going to their games.
He leaves nieces and nephews.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A graveside service for Demetrious Kurkamelis, who died Saturday, Oct. 1, will be held Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. at St. Joseph's Cemetery, with the Rev. Father Constantine Cambas, priest of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, officiating.
Those attending are invited to meet inside the cemetery gate at 2. Mr. Kurkamelis leaves two nephews, Peter C. Zaphiris of Huntington, N.Y., and Eugene Zaphiris of Oyster Bay Cove, N.Y.; a niece, Catherine Garbis of Chico, Calif.; and a grandniece, Athena Zaphiris of Beverly Hills, Calif., and a friend and caregiver, Richard Arpante of Pittsfield.
He was predeceased by a sister, Athena Zaphiris.
